Dr. Lionel Bissoon consults with an HGC diet paitent(Lilianna) in his New York office. The HCG diet involves taking pregnancy hormone injections daily, while eating 500 calories a day. The theory is that the hormones mimic pregnancy, and make the body consume stored fat in the hips, thighs and belly where the baby would be getting it from, while preventing the person on the diet from feeling hungry. The diet was developed in the 50s, by a guy named Simeon, had a period of popularity in the 70s, and now has come roaring back. It's considered a fashionable thing to do. Of course, some medical experts say the HCG part is just a gimmick, that eating just 500 calories a day will make anybody lose weight....Photo by Robert Caplin.
