  • It's strange and stirring, while reading such imaginative fiction as Gabriel García Márquez's "Love in a Time of Cholera" to turn a corner and find yourself in the very square where Ferdinand Ariza so pined for Fermina Daza. He pined for her under tamarind trees in a fictional place that Márquez called the Park of the Evangels. Today, it is called Plaza Fernández de Madrid and you can see the white house with the second-floor balcony, covered with vines, garnished by a parrot-shaped door knocker, on which Mr. Márquez modeled the young girl's home, according to the scholars...Photo by Robert Caplin.

It is on the edge of the city, looking out at the sea, unlike the many homes of the old families here that lurk on quiet inside lanes in Cartagena, Colombia...Photo by Robert Caplin.
